Dear Family and Friends,

On Sunday, June 6, 2004, I will run my first marathon. (That’s 26.2 miles!) I will be competing (more like just trying to complete) in the Suzuki Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. I have entered the event with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training Program. Team in Training is an endurance training program that provides coaching and a training program for athletes in exchange for fundraising. Runner’s World magazine called Team in Training one of the most successful training programs in the country, and one of every 28 marathon runners has been a Team in Training member.
As a Team in Training member I will compete in the marathon with my teammates from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s North Texas Chapter. We will train weekly for the next 4 months gearing up for the big day. I will be running in honor of several special people. My uncle, Tommy Greathouse lived until the age of 16 when leukemia took his life in 1965. The cure rate for leukemia has improved since then by 77%. I will also be running in honor of family friend, Mabel Simpson, who is a cancer survivor. Her last radiation treatment was March 19, 2003. Trenton Tidwell is six and has been diagnosed with Burkitt’s Leukemia and is currently undergoing treatment. He enjoys Clifford Books, puzzles and Playstation.
I first thought balancing two part-time jobs while taking a full load at college would make fundraising and training difficult, but it is incomparable to the struggles Leukemia stricken patients and their families experience.
My personal goal for this marathon is to raise $3500 toward research and development of a cure. I am writing to you to ask for your financial support. Any amount that you give will help! Please complete the attached form and send your tax deductible donation to me as soon as possible. If you are writing a check, please make it payable to “Leukemia and Lymphoma Society” with the name Rebecca Volcansek in the memo portion and attach it to the form.
My hope and prayer is that you will want to be a part of the challenge and opportunity that God has given me.

Thanks again!
